Washington: United States President Donald Trump on Friday, August 1, 2025, expressed cautious optimism over reports that India may be preparing to end its purchases of Russian oil. Speaking to reporters before departing the White House, Mr. Trump described the potential move as a “good step” and suggested it could signal a shift in India’s energy policy.

The President has consistently maintained a firm stance against countries maintaining close commercial ties with Moscow. His administration has already imposed a 25 percent tariff on Indian imports, citing trade imbalances and India’s long-standing energy relationship with Russia.

In his brief remarks, Mr. Trump did not confirm whether a change in India’s oil procurement strategy would affect existing tariffs or influence future trade talks. “We will see what happens,” he told reporters.

The issue of India’s energy imports from Russia has been a point of tension between Washington and New Delhi, especially after the start of the Ukraine conflict. Previous United States administrations have urged India to reduce its dependence on Russian crude, while India has defended its purchases as necessary for energy security and economic stability.

Mr. Trump’s tone on Friday suggested he may be open to engaging with India if the reported change holds true. “That’s a good step,” he said again, hinting at possible diplomatic progress if New Delhi follows through.

Officials in India have traditionally refrained from commenting on energy policy changes until after implementation. There has been no official confirmation from New Delhi about ending Russian oil imports.

During an impromptu press interaction on the South Lawn, Mr. Trump said, “I understand India no longer is going to be buying oil from Russia. That is what I heard. I do not know if that is right or not, but that is a good step.”

His statement comes amid heightened American scrutiny of India’s continued energy and defense ties with Russia. The United States has been working to economically isolate the Kremlin since the Ukraine war began, with energy exports serving as one of Russia’s key revenue sources.

If India does reduce or end its imports of Russian oil, it could mark a significant shift in the global energy market and potentially open the door for closer U.S.–India cooperation on trade and security.
