Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on Indians to support locally made goods to strengthen the economy during a period of global instability. His remarks came just days after US President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Indian exports to the US, alongside higher duties on several other countries, sparking fears of a slowdown in global trade and market volatility.

Speaking at a rally in Uttar Pradesh, Modi did not directly mention the US tariffs but highlighted the need for self-reliance.

“The world economy is going through many apprehensions, there is an atmosphere of instability. Now, whatever we buy, there should be only one scale: we will buy those things which have been made by the sweat of an Indian,” he said.

The renewed emphasis on domestic manufacturing and consumption reflects Modi’s long-standing “Make in India” initiative. However, the appeal has taken on greater urgency following Washington’s trade measures.

Trump has accused India of maintaining disproportionately high tariffs compared to other Asian nations and warned of further penalties, citing India’s ongoing energy and defense engagements with Russia.

The recent developments highlight rising trade tensions between New Delhi and Washington, with both sides under pressure to protect domestic industries while maintaining bilateral relations.
