More than 10,574 Indian citizens are currently imprisoned in jails across various countries, with 43 individuals facing death row, according to data presented by the Indian government in the Lok Sabha. The figures were disclosed by Kirti Vardhan Singh, the Minister of State for External Affairs, in a written reply to a parliamentary query.

Among the total number of Indian prisoners abroad, the highest concentration is in the United Arab Emirates. Other countries with a significant number of Indian inmates include nations in the Gulf region, Southeast Asia, and parts of Europe and North America. The offences range from immigration violations and drug-related charges to more serious criminal offences that have led to capital punishment in certain jurisdictions.

The Indian government has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the rights of its citizens overseas. Diplomatic missions are actively engaged in providing legal aid, monitoring court proceedings, and offering consular support to affected individuals and their families. In cases involving the death penalty, efforts are being made at diplomatic levels to seek clemency or appeal through appropriate legal channels.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) regularly collaborates with foreign governments and Indian embassies to ensure fair treatment of prisoners. The government also maintains a dedicated welfare fund to support undertrial Indian prisoners abroad who cannot afford legal representation.

This issue highlights the growing challenges faced by Indian nationals living or working overseas and the importance of legal awareness before traveling abroad. The Indian government continues to engage with international counterparts to ensure that the rights and well-being of its citizens are protected across borders.
